Outreach and Science Education

Faculty research efforts provide undergraduate and graduate students with new opportunities to learn through engagement in research programs. Science enrichment programs are also provided for K-12 and community colleges through workshops for science teachers and summer activities for students.

The Mathemathics and Science Education Center

The Mathemathics and Science Education Center is one of eleven such Centers throughout the state.  The primary goal is to Increase the quality and quantity of mathematics and science teachers in North Carolina Public Schools, strengthen instruction in mathematics and science in grades K-12. Center activities are based on the needs of classroom instructors and offers special workshops, summer institutes, graduate courses and other instructional programs aimed at helping update and recertify teachers.

AppalSEED Academy

The AppalSEED Academy is a year-long after-school science enrichment program for home school and public high school students in Northwestern North Carolina . Students participate in inter-disciplinary exploratory science projects from September through April. These activities will be led by a team of four scientists with established and productive research programs in Chemistry, Eco-toxicology, Microscopy and Biomedical Science and are designed to provide students with opportunities that will enhance their appreciation of investigative science that has local relevance and implications.

McKinney Geology Teaching Museum

McKinney Geology Teaching Museum was established in 1998 and supplements the Department of Geology's teaching mission. The museum provides exhibits used in teaching college-level geology courses and conducts public outreach to help the general public better understand geologic processes and contemporary geologic events.

Appalachian and the Community Together (ACT)

Appalachian and the Community Together (ACT) is Appalachian's clearinghouse for community service, service-learning, and community-based research opportunities within the NC High Country area, as well as across the state, nation, and world. The program offers diverse opportunities for individuals and student groups to get involved in human services and environmental advocacy, as well as assist faculty members and community partners with integrating community service projects into their academic courses and local agencies.

Goodnight Family Sustainable Development Program

Goodnight Family Sustainable Development Program has initiated several sustained efforts that symbolize the Program’s commitment to community sustainability including the Elk Knob State Park, Cove Creek School, and The Parkway School Research and Education Greenhouse.
