RIEEE became a GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) Partner in 2017. GLOBE is an "international science and education program that provides students and the public worldwide with the opportunity to participate in data collection and the scientific process and to contribute meaningfully to our undrstanding of the Earth system and global environment (GLOBE.gov)." With funding from NASA, NSF, NOAA and the Department of State, GLOBE supports shared inquiry by a network of citizen and career scientists worldwide.
We intend to utilize the GLOBE model to further enhance research and education efforts of affiliated faculty and staff when appropriate and support other units on campus interested in integrating GLOBE protocols and curricula into academic and educational outreach programs. Faculty and staff from the College of Arts and Sciences, College Access Partnerships and the Departments of Biology, Mathematical Sciences, Physics and Geography and Planning contributed to our proposal to join GLOBE. We are working to launch the program at Appalachian State in the Fall of 2017 with an information session and learning opportunities.
