The Research Institute for Environment, Energy, and Economics (RIEEE) advances the App State’s sustainability mission by fostering interdisciplinary research and collaboration across diverse fields. Through its affiliated centers, RIEEE supports applied research, policy analysis, and educational outreach that address pressing environmental, energy, and economic challenges. These centers serve as vital hubs for innovation, community engagement, and scholarly excellence.

Appalachian Energy Center

The Appalachian Energy Center (AEC) conducts applied research and provides education and outreach to support the development and deployment of clean energy technologies, policies, and economics. Its work spans five key areas: clean energy conversion and supply, efficient distribution and grid integration, energy consumption and infrastructure, emerging policy and societal impacts, and public engagement. Through strategic partnerships and legislative support, the Center advances North Carolina’s transition to a sustainable energy future.

Center for Economic Research and Policy Analysis

The Center for Economic Research and Policy Analysis (CERPA) is a multidisciplinary research unit dedicated to improving policy and decision-making through rigorous economic analysis and dissemination of relevant findings. Its research programs focus on economic development, environmental and energy policy, and experimental economics, with a strong emphasis on the intersection of these domains. CERPA also supports undergraduate research, fostering analytical and critical thinking skills among students engaged in real-world policy studies.

Southern Appalachian Environmental Research and Education Center

Southern Appalachian Environmental Research and Education Center (SAEREC) promotes interdisciplinary research and education focused on the unique environmental challenges of the Southern Appalachian region. Its initiatives address biodiversity, conservation, ecological restoration, air and water quality, land use change, and regional climate impacts. The Center engages faculty, students, and external collaborators in research that informs sustainable practices and enhances environmental literacy across the region.
